Special dates for your diary Hot Pennies The earliest reference to a fair in the town dates back to 1221 and was held on Allhallows Day. In 1247 the fair was moved to St. Margaret’s Day, July 20th. It is now held on the last Tuesday of July. This quirky tradition is opened by the Town Crier carrying a floral pole atop with a golden glove, said to represent that ‘when the glove is up, no man shall be arrested until the glove is down’. Pennies warmed in ovens are thrown out of various inns in the High Street to the assembled crowds. Honiton Festival This is Honiton’s biennial festival of live music and visual arts. The festivals take place in May. The principal activity is the presentation of first class quality live classical music. There are also presentations of painting, drawing and sculpture in local art galleries and business premises. In intervening years there are ‘mini festivals’ of three or four performances over a 4 - 5 day period, during May. In addition, lunchtime recitals and occasional major orchestral concerts take place. Ticket prices are kept below those charged in larger centres and friends are entitled to priority booking and concessions. Performers in the past have included Freddy Kempf, John Lill, Natalie Klein and Emma Johnson and visiting orchestras have included the European Union Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Age of the Enlightenment. Charter Day Honiton Celebrates on the Saturday in July directly before Hot Pennies with an all day festival commemorating the signing of the market charter over 750 years ago. The Town is abuzz with people dressed in costume and shop windows decorated to celebrate the event. The traders in particular take care to show their support for the timeless success of their street market by decorating their stalls and appearing in historic dress. During the day the centre of Honiton enjoys music, entertainment, charity stalls a town crier competition and much more. Honiton Antiques Festival For nearly one hundred years Honiton has boasted a fine selection of Antiques shops and auction houses. In 2011 a new festival was launched to celebrate Honiton's role at the centre of the antiques trade. Running annually in November, incorporating exhibitions, auctions, valuations, and fairs, this new iniative proves to be very popular and plans are now in place for the next one.
